The master thesis “Strategic Positioning of Regional Energy Suppliers” investigates how energy suppliers adapt their strategic positioning and develop new business areas. Here is the abstract:
Regional energy suppliers have a decisive role to play in the energy transition. Changing customer needs and the trend towards decentralized and renewable energy generation are forcing energy suppliers to adapt their strategic positioning and develop new business areas. The challenge here is to achieve an optimal degree of differentiation in order to position themselves on the market in such a way that a unique benefit can be created for the customer. As part of this work, patterns in current and future positioning strategies were identified through a qualitative study. While the focus is currently on the generation and sale of energy, consulting and infrastructure services in the context of the energy transition will come to the fore in the future and form the basis for future positioning. In an intensely competitive environment, a sustainable competitive advantage can be achieved through unique regional access to customers. In addition, energy suppliers can achieve a high level of vertical integration as a one-stop shop and be an integral part of the expansion of decentralized energy generation through cooperation. A clear difference can therefore be seen between current and future positioning strategies.
