Innovation Talk “Artificial Intelligence in the Energy Industry”

on

The second Innovation Talk in 2020 was held by Dr. Jens Weinmann (European School of Management and Technology Berlin, Program Director and Researcher). In his insightful talk, Dr. Weinmann emphasized on various applications of the most common machine learning techniques in the energy industry. Illustrative use case examples highlighted companies from different industries which already applied these techniques for improving their customer service or product offerings. Decision-makers should start with an application in non-core processes by using their available data sources. Initial successes can then be used for internal promotion of the technologies. As of today, promising fields of application in the energy sector are optimizations of power grids to increase their efficiency and reliability, as well as predictive maintenance for buildings. Drones are further used for observing offshore wind blades or wildfires. Challenges including current technological weaknesses in AI techniques and how to cope with them have been discussed. Analysis tools for interpretation and quality assurance (e.g., Heat Maps) will assist in reducing the limitations of certain classifications to continuously improve the accuracy and transparency of the technology. Finally, cybersecurity will be an essential topic of the future, in particular for unprotected environments that represent a risk for algorithms in self-driving cars.
